Katarina Witt began ice skating at the age of five. It was not long before her talent became evident, and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered an institution specifically designed for children who have athletic talents. Her coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt made her mark in the second position she placed at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Following that, she started winning the competition with the grace and elegance she displayed. Olympic triumph at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' gold medal for figure skating in an extremely close contest. Her victory four years ago was a lot closer. The free skating contest, however she was awarded the gold medal based on her performances in the compulsory figures and the short program. Witt became the first woman to take home a gold medal in both the men's and women's figure-skating competitions ever since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in the film industry as an actor, returned to figure skating to compete at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Though she did not get a medal, she delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in the year 1995.
